Are you Taking Time out to Reflect?

Do you take time out of your life to reflect?

Yes, I realise you may be busy, however reflection is important. What I mean by reflect – is taking the time out to review a situation or activity, your week, day, month or year. It is a great tool that allows you to take notice and become more mindful of what is happening in our lives. For example, have you ever noticed when you start a new activity, you are often enthusiastic and dedicated at first and then things change? Why does that happen? To be honest, I am not sure why it happens for you as we are all different and unique, however this is one of the reasons why it is important to take time out and reflect.

Taking Time Out to Reflect

Use the following questions to take time out to reflect on a current situation –

  • What is the situation or activity you want to reflect on? (just the facts)
  • Did you notice anything before the situation or activity? (i.e. what thoughts, feelings or body sensations were you having – just notice do not judge yourself!)
  • What did you notice after the situation or activity? (again – just noticing, no judging yourself harshly)
  • What have your learnt or remembered from this situation or activity?
  • How are you going to apply these learnings?
For example – one of the things I struggled with in the past was exercising. Besides not being a fan of it for a while, I would schedule my exercise in the afternoon. What I found was happening was I would get to the time in the afternoon when it was time to change and get dressed to exercise and I didn’t want to do it as I wanted to finish what I was working on. After reflecting and getting to the bottom of that situation, I learnt it was best for me to exercise in the morning as there were no excuses for me in the morning.
